From 1st - 12th June SNS Editor Danielle Batist was in South Sudan to report on the situation ahead of the country split; after years of bloody civil war, the south gains independence from the north on the 9th July. The trip (part of INSP's EU-funded project in partnership with IPS) was organised in collaboration with Scottish charity SCIAF, who work with local charities in the warn-torn country to help some of its poorest people.

Danielle said the experiences in Sudan left a "deep impression" on her. "With so many of the country's citizens living in extreme poverty, the challenges for the new nation are huge. It was hard to see so many innocent people- including many women and children- suffer, but it is important that these stories are being told. I hope the pieces and stunning photography will be republished by many street papers."

Danielle was accompanied on the trip by two Scottish mainstream journalists and a photographer, all of whom kindly agreed to donate their material to SNS. Danielle's articles were sent to street paper editors on Monday 27th June and also also feature on the SNS website. Danielle said the experiences in Sudan left a "deep impression" on her.
